Łódź [wut͡ɕ] ( listen) is a city in central Poland, with a population of 753,192 in 2007. It is Poland's third largest city (it was formerly the second largest, but was overtaken by Kraków in 2007). It is the capital of Łódź Voivodeship, and is approximately 135 kilometres (84 mi) south-west of Warsaw. The city's coat of arms is an example of canting – it contains a boat, alluding to the city's name which literally means "boat".
